Some things I learned in that adventure that I always forget

dpkg --get-selections | grep -v deinstall 
shows all packages you have installed on Ubuntu

/etc/apt/sources.list is where your repositories (for debian/etc packages) are stored

lsb_release -a
shows what Ubuntu release you're running
